This is a guide for US citizens who would like to obtain a New Zealand ETA, or New Zealand Visa. It will be ideal for those who either want to travel to New Zealand for work, study, or leisure purposes, or those who want to bring a family member over.
1. What is an ETA?
An ETA is a temporary visa issued by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) to applicants applying for entry to New Zealand. The visa lasts for up to three months and can be extended for up to six months. The ETA provides access to the New Zealand labor market, allowing you to work in New Zealand during the time you are permitted to stay. If you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, you are eligible to apply for an ETA.
2. How to obtain an ETA
If you are a US citizen and would like to travel to New Zealand, you will need an ETA. The ETA is New Zealand’s entry permit. To be eligible for an ETA you must have a passport that is valid for at least one year, a round trip ticket, and a return ticket for the time you are staying in New Zealand. If you are traveling to NZ for a short period of time, you should be able to get an ETA without a return ticket. However, if you plan on staying in New Zealand longer than three months, you will need to provide a return ticket.
3. What is a New Zealand Visa?
A New Zealand visa is a travel document issued by the Government of New Zealand to a citizen of a country other than New Zealand. The visa is granted to enable the holder to enter New Zealand for a temporary stay of up to three months or indefinitely. The visa is not a visa to reside in New Zealand, as New Zealand does not have a visa to reside.
4. How to obtain a New Zealand Visa
To apply for a New Zealand Visa US citizens must have a passport that is valid for at least six months from the date of travel, an onward ticket, and proof of sufficient funds to cover the duration of their stay. A New Zealand Visa is issued for two years and is renewable for a second two-year period.
