The health card, which was previously called the yellow health insurance certificate, is your guarantee that the health insurance covers you and thus have the right to, e.g., free treatment with your doctor, specialist, etc. – read about what you can and can not use the yellow health card for.
Who can get a health card?
Everyone who is registered in the population register in Denmark is covered by health insurance and receives a health card. The card shows your name, social security number, and contact information for your doctor.
What does the health card cover?
The health card entitles you to free treatment by your doctor and specialists. In addition, you can get subsidies for medicine, dental care, dental care, physiotherapy, podiatry, chiropractor, and psychology.
When should the health card be used?
You must present your health card when you see a doctor, specialist, dentist, dental hygienist, physiotherapist, podiatrist, chiropractor, psychologist, pharmacy, hospital, and municipality.
You can choose between two security groups.
The health card also states which health insurance group you belong to. As a Danish citizen residing in Denmark, you must choose between two health insurance groups:
Security group 1:
You are registered with a specific doctor and must have a referral to specialists. The region pays all expenses for treatment by a doctor or specialist. However, be aware that some doctors/specialists also offer private treatment, which health insurance will not cover.
Security group 2:
You are not registered with a specific doctor and do not need a referral to a specialist. However, it still requires a referral from your doctor to see a physiotherapist, podiatrist, or psychologist. All of them must agree with the region for you to receive a subsidy.
You will receive the same subsidy from the region as a group 1 insured citizen for a similar treatment. In some places, the contribution is deducted from the bill, and you have to pay the rest of the doctor’s fee yourself. Elsewhere, you must first pay the entire bill and then get the subsidy refunded by the municipality. Doctors, specialists, dentists, dental hygienists, and physiotherapists determine the size of the fee for treatment.
New health card
If you move the population register address, you will automatically receive a new health card. If you change doctors, lose your health care, etc., you can order a new one at borger—dk or at your municipality’s citizen service center.
The special health card
If you live in an EU / EEA country and work in Denmark, you must have a particular health card – often called a “border crossing certificate.” This is documentation that you are entitled to Danish medical care. You get a special health card from the Danish municipality you are moving from. If you have never lived in Denmark, you must have a health card in the city where you work.
Health card app
Your physical health card is also available as an app, the Health Card app, which you can install on your mobile. The app is a supplement to the health card, which you will always receive in the mail if, for example, you get a new address or change doctor.
The health card app has the same features as the physical health card and will automatically update with new information. In addition, in the Health Card app, you can see your children’s health cards until they turn 15.
To be able to create your health care in the Health Card app, you must:
- have a residence in Denmark
- use NemID
- be in security group 1 or 2.
