In many countries around the world, people like to spend their time with family and friends on this day. They also like to decorate their houses and eat special foods on this day.

Christmas Eve is a Christian holy day that honors St Nicholas of Myra (270–343), who was an early bishop of Myra in Asia Minor (part of present-day Turkey). St Nicholas is known to have given gifts anonymously so that others would not feel embarrassed about their poverty or lack of material wealth; he was often called “Santa Claus” in some parts of Europe as well as North America after becoming popular through stories by Washington Irving beginning in 1809 – though he did not become associated with Father Christmas until 1931 when Charles W Moore published ‘A Visit From Saint Nicholas’ under the pseudonym ‘St Nickolas Kringle’.

On this night Christians believe that Jesus Christ was born into our world 2000 years ago so they celebrate with food (especially cookies), games such as charades or musical chairs, singing songs such as Silent Night Carols at Midnight mass services taking place across churches worldwide.”
