What is the origin of the time change?
The first time change in Europe occurred during the First World War in Germany, with the aim of saving coal by maximizing the hours of sunshine during the day. However, after the war, most countries eliminated this time adjustment.
Although it was 200 years earlier, in 1784, the first time this measure was proposed to make the most of the hours of sunshine. It was the politician, scientist and inventor Benjamin Franklin, being the ambassador of the United States in France , he realized that many hours of light were lost when waking up at six in the morning and seeing that it had already dawned and, on the contrary, at night he had to light the candles to continue working. Franklin wrote to The Journal of Paris suggesting various measures to promote energy saving and drew up a treaty called the Economic Project , but in the end it was not taken into account.
In 1905 the English builder William Willett proposed this measure again , after something similar to Frankin’s happened to him. Every day Willett used to go for a ride before breakfast and he realized that Londoners were wasting several hours of sunshine a day by sleeping. For this reason, the builder recommended making transitions of 20 minutes a week, but his proposal was forgotten, as was that of the American politician.
In 1916, the United States was the first country to make the time change official in order to save fuel, and two years later they made it a federal law.
When was the time change established in Spain?
Before the 20th century, the time in Spain was quite chaotic, since each province had its own time depending on its geographical location and each community or province made its own time changes as they saw fit . Although at the international level, Spanish time was governed by the Madrid meridian.
However, at the beginning of the century, between the gap between provinces, the start of the wars and the measures that had been carried out , Spain also joined this time change . First of all, the official time of the country was established from the Greenwich meridian. In addition, on April 15, 1918, thanks to an official mandate, the first summer time was experienced in Spain .
In spite of everything, this change did not take place during the years 1920 and 1925 nor between 1930 and 1936. And during the Civil War in the peninsula there were two different schedules , depending on whether one belonged to the national or republican side . Therefore, the end of the war ended at different times for each side.
At the end of the war, with Francisco Franco in power, Spain began to follow the German time to have greater contact with Adolf Hitler. Although the time change began to be implemented and became official in 1973 due to the great oil crisis that was experienced throughout the world.
Elimination of the time change
In August 2018, the European Commission raised the possible elimination of the time change, thus leaving the same schedule throughout the year, but in the end no firm decision was made . In this way, in Spain the summer time , UTC+2, would remain immovable.
