SoCo
Known locally as SoCo, South Congress Avenue is a pedestrian-friendly street lined with local restaurants, boutiques and galleries. It’s also home to the Cathedral of Junk, a large sculpture made entirely from discarded goods – perfect spot for things to do in Austin.

Texas State Capitol Building
The Texas State Capitol Building is an Austin landmark that everyone should visit at least once. It’s a fun and hassle-free way to spend an afternoon in downtown Austin.
The 311-foot-high dome-capped building overlooks the city, providing a panoramic view of the commercial district and the Colorado River. It’s built from “sunset red” Texas granite, sourced from Marble Falls about 50 miles away.
Inside, the rotunda is adorned with portraits of past presidents and governors. There’s also a statue of the Goddess of Liberty made from 80 pieces of welded zinc.
Barton Springs Pool
Located in Austin’s Zilker Park, Barton Springs Pool is an oasis of cool water fed by underground springs that keep the waters around 68 degrees all year. It is a beloved destination for locals, tourists and wildlife alike.
The three-acre natural swimming hole was originally privately owned by Andrew Zilker until 1918, when he deeded the land to the city. The city expanded the pool in the 1920s by damming the springs and adding sidewalks.
In addition to enjoying the cooling waters of the pool, visitors can also enjoy a simulated limestone cave and learn about the Edwards Aquifer that supplies the springs and keeps the waters pristine. You can also buy discounted tickets to swim at the pool.
Zilker Metropolitan Park
Zilker Metropolitan Park is considered Austin’s most-loved park and offers everything from hiking, biking and playing disc golf to swimming and attending a musical or play at the outdoor theater. It’s also home to the Barton Springs Pool, a natural spring-fed pool that stays warm throughout the year.
A popular swim spot, the three-acre pool is fed by underground springs and keeps water temperature at a constant 70 degrees. It’s located near the Zilker Hillside Theater, an outdoor amphitheatre that hosts various music events like country concerts and theatrical performances each summer and fall for the local community.
Bullock Texas State History Museum
A few blocks north of the State Capitol, Bullock Texas State History Museum interprets the continually unfolding “Story of Texas” to the broadest possible audience through meaningful educational experiences. Three floors of engaging exhibits; innovative educational programs in the Texas Spirit Theater; and Austin’s premier IMAX Theatre are just some of the many highlights.
Founded by former Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock, this state-of-the-art museum traces Texas’s story through a collection of artifacts and a robust calendar of special exhibitions, films, and events. You’ll find everything from the Spanish colonization of the region to the fall of the Alamo, Tejano culture and the oil industry.
Austin Zoo
If you love animals, the Austin Zoo is an excellent place to visit. It’s more sanctuary than zoo, and its volunteers have an unwavering commitment to animal welfare.
Located on the southwest edge of Austin off Highway 290 West and Circle Drive, this pleasant Hill Country zoo is home to over 300 animals from over 100 different species.
In the Dairy Barn, visitors can feed Boer goats, Nigerian dwarf goats, pigs and pygmy goats. Emu, zebra, ostrich, axis deer and llama habitats surround the barnyard. The zoo also has a train ride. The Rawhide Rocket takes you through the hills for a 20-minute ride.
