I recently had the chance to ask the founder of DropInBlog, Jesse Schoberg about his experience running a completely remote startup company. In addition to hearing first-hand how somebody managed to escape the rat race and find success in a personal venture, the ability to pick their brain is priceless.
Getting the chance to learn from DropInBlog founder Jesse Schoberg was an impactful way to get insights into his areas of expertise. In addition to learning more about how DropInBlog works, we got the opportunity to hear about his recipe and ideologies for success.
All About DropInBlog For Non-Technical People
Once we dug into DropInBlog we learned just how revolutionary this platform is. As Schoberg illustrates, “Let’s say you built a website for your business, these days many people use “’no-code’ style website builders. These could be things like Shopify, Teachable, Carrd, Leadpages etc. These platforms are quite good at building specific types of websites (eCommerce, membership, small business, etc). However, they are not very good at blogging.”
This is where DropInBlog comes into play. Using a simple line of code, the website owner can ‘drop in’ their blog into any of these platforms. The DropInBlog system also gives users the ability to optimize for SEO and quite a few other bells and whistles that users are accustomed to.
What It’s Like to Be a CEO & Common Misconceptions Behind Them
When entrepreneurs finally strike gold and find a great idea they naturally switch their role from “self-employed” over to “CEO.” As this change occurs, as Schoberg elaborates, the CEO starts to learn that they are operating at a higher level with new challenges to overcome: :
“I think the main misconception is how much mental space being a CEO or entrepreneur takes up. Ideally, they are not doing all the execution of the ideas, but instead, a huge amount of time and energy is put into the planning and vision portion. I would say I spend a few hours per day on average just marinating on the problems and goals of our company. Those thoughts eventually lead to conclusions, which lead to actionable steps for myself and the team.”
In other words, Schoberg argues that the CEO is the individual who provides much of the brains and inspiration behind the company. The brunt of the vision and all the logistics behind making the dreams into reality, though, lies predominantly in the hands of the rest of the team.
As Schoberg demonstrates, being a CEO is not an easy task. A CEO needs to zoom out enough to harness the full force of the team, who are eventually the ones that help move the company forward.
Schoberg’s Advice for New Entrepreneurs
As mentioned, one of the purposes of carrying out this interview was to pick the brain of Schoberg and learn more about the advice he would give to the new generation of entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs who might currently be in front of their computers, contemplating an idea to help get them out of their parent’s basement.
As he puts it, “The main advice I’d give to people interested in pursuing entrepreneurship is to research less and do more. It’s a common case that I meet people that want to start a business that have read all the books but haven’t actually launched anything.” In other words, Schoberg argues that taking actual steps towards reaching a goal is more important than learning theories and ideologies.
He continues by asserting that “It’s okay to fail, you’re going to fail a lot, but you learn a lot more from doing than reading. So get out there and take some action on your ideas. These days with so many no-code builders you can launch an idea with very little technical skills so the barriers are lower than ever.”
Therefore, if we were to break down Schoberg’s ideology into a simple phrase, it might be something like, study less and take more action. Indeed, it seems this is exactly what Schoberg did to create DropInBlog.
