Major League Baseball (MLB) is the world’s premier professional sports organization. It consists of 30 teams that play in two divisions: the American League and the National League.
Until the advent of MLB expansion in 1961, there were only two eight-team major leagues. The winners of the American and National Leagues would play each other in a World Series.
The Cardinals
The Cardinals are a major league baseball team that has had a rich history of success. They have won 11 World Series and 19 National League pennants, plus four American Association titles.
The team has had a long period of family ownership, beginning with Charles Bidwill in 1932. He kept the team operating during the depression and World War II years, and finally built a winning team.
The Cubs
The Cubs have a long and rich history in Chicago. They won the World Series in 1906 and have been to the postseason every year since then.
They have a strong pitching staff and a talented young core of players that include Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and Javy Baez. However, they have struggled to make the playoffs in recent years.
The Reds
The Cincinnati Reds are one of the oldest professional baseball teams in the world. They were among the founding members of the National League and have a rich history.
They’ve won four pennants and six division titles during their time in the NL, including three in the 1970s. Their best team of the decade featured legendary stars Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez.
The Braves
The Braves are one of the oldest franchises in major league baseball. They were founded in Boston and have since relocated to Atlanta, Milwaukee, and Cleveland.
The team name was first introduced in 1912, when James Gaffney bought the team and changed it from the Beaneaters to the Braves. The name is based on Tammany Hall, a New York City political organization that used an Indian headdress as its symbol.
The Mets
The Mets have been around for a long time, with an impressive track record of winning and making the playoffs. They’ve also been through some ups and downs throughout their history, including a huge dip in attendance following the revelation of Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.
They’ve been blessed with a number of storied players over the years, but Tom Seaver is perhaps their most famous player. He led the Mets to an improbable world championship in 1969.
The Dodgers
The LA Dodgers, based in Los Angeles, are one of the most successful teams in Major League Baseball. They have won seven World Series championships and a record 24 National League pennants.
The Dodgers were founded in 1883 and began playing at Washington Park, a ballpark on Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn. They later moved to Ebbets Field, which opened in 1914.
The Angels
The Angels have a long history of success in baseball and are one of the most beloved teams in the sport. They were founded and originally owned by cowboy movie star Gene Autry and play in Anaheim, California.
The team began as an expansion team in 1961 and spent several years playing around Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium before moving to their current home, Anaheim Stadium. They’ve been there ever since.
The Rangers
As the motto goes, “Rangers lead the way.”
They have a long history in the U.S. Army, starting in World War II.
The Rangers have been involved in every major military operation since then, and they continue to be a leading light infantry unit under the US Army Special Operations Command.
The Brewers
The Brewers are a professional baseball team based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They are a member club of the National League (NL) Central Division.
The Brewers began their Major League history as the Seattle Pilots in 1969, before moving to Milwaukee. They played their first season at Sick’s Stadium, and then relocated to Miller Park, in 1970.
The Royals
One of the oldest and most successful major league baseball teams in history, the Royals were founded in 1890. They still have their original stadium and are among the most popular teams in baseball.
