Five Qualities That Make an Excellent Insurance Agent

As an insurance agent, there are several qualities that will help you build relationships with your clients and create a successful career.  

You are a lifeline to information and confidence that your clients need.  Not to mention that if you want a successful career, you will have to constantly develop yourself and learn more qualities to help you succeed.  

Here are five of the top qualities that make an excellent insurance agent.

1. Honesty

“Honesty is the best policy” is a term that we have all heard at some point in time.  As an insurance agent, it’s important to remember this phrase.  Why? Honesty and being transparent with your clients will lead to stronger relationships as well as help you build a more extensive client list.

If you are known for being an honest agent, then you build rapport to the point that people begin to recommend you to friends, family, and maybe even co-workers.  When you start to build your portfolio, having a reputation for being honest will help develop trust which is a great way to show others how passionate you are about your work.

2. Passion

While this may not seem like something important for your career, this couldn’t be further from the truth.  Passion is a quality that can be over or underplayed.  If you don’t show enough passion for the work that you do, people will think that your job is troublesome.  Even if that isn’t the case, not expressing your dedication and passion for what you do, shows others that you don’t care.

On the other hand, too much passion and all of the sudden, people can become overwhelmed and not know how to handle your enthusiasm.

Being passionate and enthusiastic about your work is a fine balance so that your clients can see that you know what you are doing and understand that you care.  Try to keep the enthusiasm and passion at a balance.

Don’t forget that you also need to be aware of your clients and their comfort levels before restraining or unleashing your passion for insurance and helping others.

3. Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence, or EI for short, is the way that you pay attention to how others feel and react to situations that they are in.  This requires attention to detail, great observation skills, as well as people skills.

If you have a client that seems timid with their arms crossed or fiddling with something, going full passion mode isn’t going to work for that client.  Instead, you would need to try a more gentle approach that encourages the client and helps them see you as a source of confidence and knowledge.

Eventually, you’ll find that you can help build confidence as well as match the energy of other clients based on what you observe.  This does take time and constant observation which will also help develop your persistence.

4. Persistence

The key to developing any career is persistence.  Some people find it easier to deal with and push through adversity than others.  There’s nothing wrong with those who find adversity more difficult, just know that in an insurance agent’s career, there is more rejection than acceptance when building your portfolio.

Because of the dog-eat-dog world full of competitors, you will have to continually push forward even when everything is slow and feels bleak.  Remember, keep going and you will build that client list especially if you remember to practice emotional intelligence, honesty, and passion … but also remain flexible as often as you can.

5. Flexibility

Flexibility is another difficult quality that is absolutely necessary for an insurance agent to learn and become familiar with.  With the recent pandemic, many individuals are still wary of leaving their homes, and even more are used to the bustling virtual environment.
