The world, while full of appetizing foods on one hand, also has some of the wackiest, offensive, and bizarre foods which parade under the name of ‘exotic foods.
1. Fried Tarantula
That’s right! In Cambodia, the Thai Zebra Tarantula, which is about the quantity of a human hand, is a common delicacy. These can be established everywhere in Cambodia- from street-side vendors to costly restaurants. The tarantulas are pan-fried with garlic and a sprinkle of salt. 2. Wasp Crackers

3. Century Eggs
Do you remember fighting for breath every time you passed by a science lab with ammonia and sulfur? Now imagine eating it. Century eggs or millennium eggs are a Chinese dish in which the eggs of quail, chicken, and duck are covered in ashes, and clay salt and preserved for months together. The inner of the egg decomposes and forms a greenish jelly-like mixture which is then attended to straight on your plate. Their taste is incredibly tough but the dish is very well-liked in China.
In the past, some have said that these old eggs were sifted in horse urine; while they do have a powerful odor, this is false (and a pretty gross rumor). They’ve been used for over 600 years, so people seem to like them. Will you?
4. Chapulines
What would a schedule of exotic dishes be without some bugs?
These aren’t just any old bugs, though. They are fried grasshoppers, created only in certain areas of Mexico, like Oaxaca, and obtained only during the summer months when the grasshoppers are adolescent. In addition, it’s only after they are completely washed that they are toasted up on a clay ground called a comal with various herbs and spices, including agave worm-infused salt.
Chapulines have been characterized as tasting types like potato chips – crunchy and yeasty – and are famous as an add-on for tacos across Mexico. Plus, they are stored with protein, so why not throw a couple on for your second taco night? ¡Que delicious!
