Controllers

The controllers included with the Quest 2 are the third generation Oculus Touch controllers. The design of the new controllers was influenced by the original Oculus Rift controllers.[7] Their battery life has been increased by four times compared to the controllers that came with the first generation Quest.[14][4][7]

Games

Quest 2 supports all games and software developed for the first-generation model, and existing titles can be updated to support higher graphical quality on Quest 2. It also supports Oculus Link, which allows the headset to be used with Oculus Rift-compatible software on a PC. [4] It is not backwards compatible with Oculus Go apps and games. [15]

In April 2021, a software update added “Air Link” as an experimental feature that allows games to be streamed from a PC over Wi-Fi. [9]

Resonance

The Verge commented positively in a pre-release review, noting that while there were no standout features, there were “worthwhile” improvements such as a lighter weight, a screen with better display and refresh rate than the original Quest, and a repositioned USB port. The new strap was criticized for having “less support and a somewhat cumbersome locking mechanism” (which was partially remedied by the Elite Strap accessory, available separately), and the new IPD mechanism was described as “cumbersome” and not as comprehensive as that of the first-generation model. In summary, it was argued that while the Quest 2 was not a “must upgrade” for existing owners, it offered “the best overall balance of hardware, features, and price.”[25] In addition, the Quest 2 was described as a “must upgrade” for existing owners.

Ars Technical was less positive, noting that the internal speakers were “noticeably crisper and louder”, but criticized the new fabric strap compared to the elastic straps of the original Quest (arguing that it alone was responsible for the alleged weight reduction), limited IPD options, poorer battery life, and controllers that offered less grip and accuracy during more intense gaming. The switch from OLED to LCD resulted in “sharper” images, but more “washed out” colors[4].

The Mozilla Foundation issued its “privacy not included” warning. Also, 70% of ~9000 community members rated the device as “super creepy.” [26]
