The Electronic Travel Authorization (or eTA) was introduced by Canadian authorities in 2015 as a way to more efficiently assess foreign travelers before they enter the country. Dutch citizens do not need to apply for a visa to visit Canada. This is because the Netherlands is one of the 50 visa-free countries whose citizens can enter Canada by presenting their passports at the border.
Canada ETA program for the Netherlands
The eTA Canada application form can be filled out from the applicant’s home or office which eliminates the need for personal inspection. To be eligible for eTA, applicants must meet all eTA requirements for Dutch citizens. One of these requirements is that they have an electronic passport that is machine-readable.
However, Dutch citizens who are concerned about this should check whether their passports are electronic before applying for eTA.

ETA Canada requirements for Dutch citizens
For eTA to be valid, travelers must enter Canada through an airport. Those who cross the border by land or arrive on a cruise ship are not eligible for ETA and should be checked for visas in addition to their identification and travel documents.
There are other requirements for applying for Canada eTA
All applicants must have:
- A Dutch passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of travel.
- A valid credit or debit card for payment of fees.
- A current email address to receive eTA.
Another Canada Visa for Dutch Citizens requirement is that dual must apply for their ETA using the same passport they wish to travel. This is because eTA is linked to the passport number used in the application.
Citizens must be over 18 years of age at the time of application. If they are not, an adult is allowed to apply on their behalf. Adults applying for a minor must fill in the same details as a complete application but must provide some basic personal information about themselves as a parent or guardian of the minor.
All passengers must leave the airport before the date specified in their passport. If a Dutch citizen wishes to extend their stay in Canada, they can apply for an extension from within Canada by completing an application at least 30 days before the expiration of their travel permit
Portuguese citizens do not need a visa to enter the country to travel to Kandy for 180 days but must obtain travel approval in advance. The process has been incredibly simple since 2016 when the Canadian government introduced the Canada ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), a multiple electronic visa waiver that allows Portuguese nationals multiple entries to stay up to 6 months with each entry during the validity period. ETA Canada was launched for Portuguese nationals to simplify the process of obtaining a Canadian visa waiver from Portugal which can be applied for from the traveler’s own home.
Do Portuguese citizens need a Canadian visa?
Travelers from Portugal to Canada who does not wish to stay for more than 6 consecutive months do not need to apply for a Canadian visitor visa from the embassy or consulate.
However, they must obtain approved travel permits prior to their visit. This process has been greatly simplified by the introduction of online ETA for Canada.
An eTA electronic visa waiver for Portugal to Canada is valid for a period of 5 years or until the expiration date of the traveler’s passport. It allows multiple entrances to Canada through one of the country’s airports during this period but does not allow travel to the country by land or sea border.
However, a Portuguese citizen can stay in the country for a maximum of 180 days with each entry. To stay longer, travelers must apply for a different visa for Canada.
