Freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia, the fighting fish or Betta Splendens fish, is one of the most sought-after fish by aquarium enthusiasts due to its beautiful appearance.

The males of this species are in fact equipped with floating fins in shades of blue or red, while the females have colors ranging from golden to brown.

Among the goldfish, the Betta fish is the least alive, however if carefully bred it can live in captivity for up to 5 years.

Habitat and coexistence with other fish

This species is defined as a “fighter” precisely because it proves to be very aggressive towards other fish: if you decide to breed Betta fish, it is therefore advisable to let it live alone or accompany it to females of its own species.

Precisely because of its aggressiveness it is advisable to choose an aquarium of considerable size, with a capacity of at least 100 liters, and set it up with rocks, ravines and plants where female fish can take refuge and hide.

It is also important that the aquarium have a lid in the upper part because fighting fish tend to jump. 

As for the water temperature, it should be between 22ºC and 32ºC: the ideal temperature is 25 °C, the water must be chlorine-free and must be renewed every 7 days.

Among the aquatic plants to be included in the aquarium, the natural ones such as Water Lentil, Elodea Densa and Bamboo are absolutely preferred, as, unlike fake plants, they do not cause lacerations to the fish’s tail.

Feeding the betta fish

The Betta fish is an omnivorous fish , but in nature it tends to feed on zooplankton, mosquito larvae and other small insects that inhabit the plants at the bottom of rivers.

On the market there are specific foods of various types and in various formats, from freeze- dried to granulated feeds from flakes to frozen ones.

Nutrition directly affects the health of Bettas and therefore it is very important to always choose foods of excellent quality, integrating them with food supplements capable of making them active and energetic.

How long do betta fish live

On average, a Betta fish lives to be 2-5 years old. The life length of betta fish depends upon the environment of the tank. By maintaining a clean and healthy tank and diet will help them live a longer life.
