Initiatives Cities Can Take to Help Combat Climate Change

Here are some of the most significant initiatives taken by cities and local government units that help them combat climate change in their own locality. Now many people might argue that it might not be that much considering. There are only a few of them and what significance could they make in such as small-scale initiative. But then again, a small gain done systematically and consistently will do much good than just doing nothing at all. But data shows otherwise because the cities made initiatives to combat climate change. This is also reported to have a higher quality of life for their citizens. Here are some of those fruitful initiatives.

Garbage Segregation Bins

The best way to start it is to educate and include the citizens directly. One way to do it is through the imitative of mandating garbage segregation in households. Each household will be made to segregate garbage accordingly so that there would be lesser sorting done on processing plants and those which can be reused and recycled can proceed directly to recycling plants.

As it is mandated for everyone, the local government unit is also directed by such an initiative to place garbage segregation bins around the city. So that such practice can be practiced outside the home as well. For example, many cities in Germany place these types of customisable mobile garbage bin in their parks. It is now considered normal behavior among its citizens to segregate garbage accordingly.

Weekly Clean-up Drive

Many green cities are also taking the initiative to do weekly clean-up drives around the city area. Though this needs that much budget for the government to fund. It becomes lighter in terms of responsibility. If the civic societies and other groups donate and contribute something to the cause and to the movement.

It should be noted that mandated initiatives are deemed useless if the citizens will not join the cause. Weekly clean-up drives must also be coordinated to areas that truly need the attention of being cleaned such as coastal areas, parks, and eco-tourism sites. Not only will this help the environment. But it can also be a venue for teenagers and young children to be included as well.

Giving back corporate Responsibility

Another great mandate that creates a greener and cleaner city is in giving back to the industries the responsibility of taking the lead in cleaning and handling their own waste and garbage.  This happened during a major clean-up drive in the Philippines. There used to be a sea of garbage in an urban coastal area which has now become a pristine boulevard and beach to stroll into.

The local government issued notifications to the industries that surround the beach area to handle their own waste. Face being given a notice of foreclosure if they will not act on it and be responsible for their own waste.

The good thing here is that cities and local governments take on these green initiatives and policies. They are not done so for the sake of having a pretty city. But rather it is done in light that citizens who live in green cities have a higher quality of life than those who live in highly polluted areas.
