The problem is that there are so many filters on the market today that the solution is no longer simple – you have to do your own research to find the best filter for your needs. Reverse osmosis water filtration systems basically work on a very simple principle – they create pressure that carries a solution (in this case, pure water) through a semi-permeable membrane. The impurities thus remain behind the membrane and in turn, you get pure water without impurities.
Sounds good in theory. But if you think about it, in reality, they can only remove something heavier than water. The problem is that some chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides are lighter than the water itself, so they pass through the membrane and get into the “treated” water. On the other hand, some of the ingredients you want to preserve, like salt and some minerals that our bodies need, are removed. So this type of filter is not very suitable for making drinking water.
Another important reason why these systems are not suitable for home use is that they lose a lot of water due to the low backpressure. They can only recover 15% of the water that enters the system and the rest is disposed of as wastewater. Industrial plants have methods to recirculate this water with an efficiency of almost 50%, but these methods are not suitable for domestic installations.
No matter how wealthy you are, you will be surprised at the cost. The average reverse osmosis system can cost around $10,000, and as we have seen, it barely gets the job done. There are cheaper and more efficient alternatives for home use, such as carbon filters.
The truth is that reverse osmosis systems are designed for industrial use. They are used in desalination plants, in wastewater treatment, and in shrimp tanks. In the food industry, they save a lot of money when they are used to producing concentrated juice and powdered milk instead of the traditional heat-treatment process. They are highly prized in car washes because they produce low-salt water, which car paints love.
So if you are looking for water filtration systems for your home, it is better to consider other alternatives.
