Busting myths about female bodies

Perhaps it stems from the genuine lack of interest in women, or perhaps men are in the habit of shrugging off all information that comes from women, but for the sake of a peaceful coexistence, it’s high time men, and other beings, familiarize themselves with the actual truths about female bodies, and not what they construe to be the truth.

To be fair to men, some women also don’t have the full knowledge about their own bodies. These can be attributed to the urban legends, shame in asking about your body and the embarrassment over things that are natural. Hence, it is vital that the common myths (re: misconceptions) about the female body be debunked.

Myths about female bodies

Pain and sex go hand in hand in women

Sex is not just the pleasure of men; it is technically to be about mutual pleasure. Pain during sex could be due to lack of lubrication, not enough stimulation, or even due to some problems like PID etc. that require intervention of a gynecologist.

Women can lactate all the time

Breasts are not a hose to supply milk at your whim. Breast milk is carefully regulated by the hormones in the body and occurs naturally in the aftermath of pregnancy.

So, not every woman can dredge up milk from their breasts, there is a time and place (and hormones) for that.

Hymen is the only indicator of virginity

That is entirely false. Some women are not even born with hymen, others can still have their hymen intact despite penetrative sex because it can stretch. Use of tampons, exercise can also damage hymen. So, why not try asking the woman if she is one before making assumptions about her?

Vaginal intercourse is the only way women derive pleasure during sex

Only a very small percentage of women get an orgasm from penetrative sex alone. Most require clitoral stimulation for to orgasm, while some women almost entirely never orgasm from penetrative sex.

Women can’t get pregnant on their periods

It is very likely that when women are on their periods, there is still a viable egg in their uterus, as it is possible that ovulation occurs during periods. So, unprotected sex during periods can still cause them to become pregnant.

Furthermore, since the sperm can remain in the uterus for days, it is possible that women had sex before their periods, but ovulated during, which then leads to pregnancy.

Tampons can get lost in the body

Vagina is the birth canal and is separated from the uterus by the cervix, which is a very narrow opening. Tampon gets placed in the vagina and is placed from moving elsewhere due to the narrowness of the cervix, and lack of other orifices for exit.

Women can’t sweat

If we are making preposterous claims, then let’s just say men can’t think. Offensive, right?

Female genitals should smell a certain way

It is often a commonly conceived notion that women will have their genitals smelling like a rose bush. But have you pondered over why you are having such ideas?

It is not just men who have such unreasonable thoughts, but some women also think their vaginal odor is something to be ashamed of, as it doesn’t smell like Chanel no. 5.

Ads touting vaginal cleaning products and scents don’t help. The smell emanating from the genitals is fine, it’s all natural. If it’s genuinely off, then it could be an indicator of something being amiss.

In that case, schedule a visit to your gynecologist in Karachi, instead of using feminine hygiene products that can cause further problems like infections in your nether regions.
