Choosing a good name is essential in the early stages of your project, but there are other aspects that you should also consider when creating the brand of your startup, and today we are focusing on graphic design.
Branding = identity, logo, strategy, design, and marketing.
Graphic design is not simply about doing something “nice,” and that’s it. Design involves the combination of form and function.
A great design connects your eye and your brain in a way that flows and makes sense. Surely you have ever noticed: when you see an excellent design aligned with the values of a brand, it will attract your attention, even if you do not know very well what makes it stand out, and why you have noticed it.
That magic is made by design. Today we have consulted Jorge García-Riego, CEO of VXLab branding & design direction, and he has given us a few basic tips so that you are at least aware of what you need in terms of graphic design when you start your startup:
1. The queen is typography
A good choice of fonts is 80% of the success of branding design. There are countless options with free or paid licenses. But in any case, make sure you choose well.
Find a typeface with a character to design your logo, and use a different secondary to write texts. It is very important that the latter is easily readable. Also, it has a varied family (at least three weights, bold, light) to be able to adapt the text to different situations.
Important tip: Make sure that the chosen font is included in Google fonts to avoid compatibility problems when using it in digital media.
2. Don’t be afraid of white space
A classic failure of designers is to fill all the available space with things so that it does not look empty. Error!
Here is the magic that makes good designers: you have to know how to compose correctly. Not too big, it suffocates space. Not too small, or it cannot be read. What’s more:
Be careful with the hierarchy between content: ensure that what has to be read first is read first.
Have enough elements to give the subject personality and prominence.
Do not go over colorful. When you start, sometimes it isn’t easy to stop.
And if you do not know what the middle ground is in all this, go for the minimalist design. It is the style that best hides terrible designers.
3. Show your personality
Isn’t it annoying to come across someone on the street who has the same hat as you? It makes us feel a little genuine.
Do not be afraid to show what your style is, but with control, because it depends on what you are “selling.” You may need to convey other more important values.
If yours are financial products, for example, avoid being too extravagant. You have to convey reliability.
If instead, yours are tailor-made trips, you have to transmit experience and creativity. Having a more exotic image will work.
4. Hire a specialist
The most basic suggestion we can give is this: hire someone who knows how to do branding design work. Just as we would not think of setting up a plumbing installation at home based on tips, neither can we build and design a brand strategy based on tutorials.
Suppose you can’t get a solution with balance, composition, scale, contrast, patterns, or emphasis. You will need help.
There are professionals for all budgets. Please confirm that the person or firm you choose understands your expectations, values, audience, and objectives and, very importantly, that they have previous experiences that they can demonstrate in their portfolio.
Conclusion
The typeface you choose, your logo, your colors, your images, everything is part of your brand, your essence, and what they remember about you. Having a good corporate image helps you differentiate yourself and be more competitive. A creative, unique, and personalized style always attracts more attention. It will give you more visits, possibly more clients and prestige in your sector.
Graphic design is not something you associate the first to the online world, much less innovative. Companies and small businesses have always had to invest in different visual marketing campaigns to promote themselves, creating business cards or advertising posters.
The advantage of developing an online brand versus an offline brand is clear: we are going to achieve greater visibility for a lower cost.
